يُجَٰدِلُونَكَ فِي ٱلۡحَقِّ بَعۡدَ مَا تَبَيَّنَ كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَوۡتِ وَهُمۡ يَنظُرُونَ
Ils discutent avec toi au sujet de la vérité après qu'elle fut clairement apparue; comme si on les poussait vers la mort et qu'ils (la) voyaient
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs — Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(Disputing with thee of) arguing with you about (the Truth) the war (after it had been made manifest) that you do not act upon or command anything except that with which your Lord has commanded you, (as if they were being driven to death visible) driven to death while looking straight at it.
وَإِذۡ يَعِدُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ إِحۡدَى ٱلطَّآئِفَتَيۡنِ أَنَّهَا لَكُمۡ وَتَوَدُّونَ أَنَّ غَيۡرَ ذَاتِ ٱلشَّوۡكَةِ تَكُونُ لَكُمۡ وَيُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُحِقَّ ٱلۡحَقَّ بِكَلِمَٰتِهِۦ وَيَقۡطَعَ دَابِرَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
(Rappelez-vous), quand Allah vous promettait qu'une des deux bandes sera à vous. Vous désiriez vous emparer de celle qui était sans armes, alors qu'Allah voulait par Ses paroles faire triompher la vérité et anéantir les mécréants jusqu'au dernier

(And when Allah promised you one of the two bands (of the enemy)) one of two things: the caravan or the belongings of the army (that it should be yours) as spoils of war, (and you longed) you wished (that other than the armed one) hardship and war (might be yours) as spoils of war, i.e. the booty of camels. (And Allah willed that He should cause the Truth to triumph by His words) He willed to manifest His religion by means of His assistance and strengthening, (and cut the root of the disbelievers) the root and traces of the disbelievers;
لِيُحِقَّ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَيُبۡطِلَ ٱلۡبَٰطِلَ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ
afin qu'Il fasse triompher la vérité et anéantir le faux, en dépit de la répulsion qu'en avaient les criminels
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs — Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(That He might cause the Truth) in order to manifest the Religion of Islam in Mecca (to triumph and bring vanity to naught) and destroy idolatry and its adherents, (however much the guilty might oppose) even if the idolaters dislike it;
إِذۡ تَسۡتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَجَابَ لَكُمۡ أَنِّي مُمِدُّكُم بِأَلۡفٖ مِّنَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ مُرۡدِفِينَ
(Et rappelez-vous) le moment où vous imploriez le secours de votre Seigneur et qu'Il vous exauça aussitôt: «Je vais vous aider d'un millier d'Anges déferlant les uns à la suite des autres.»
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs — Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(When ye sought help of) when you called upon (your Lord) to assist you on the Day of Badr (and He answered you (saying): I will help you with a thousand of the angels, rank on rank) coming one after another to help you.
وَمَا جَعَلَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بُشۡرَىٰ وَلِتَطۡمَئِنَّ بِهِۦ قُلُوبُكُمۡۚ وَمَا ٱلنَّصۡرُ إِلَّا مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
Allah ne fit cela que pour (vous) apporter une bonne nouvelle et pour qu'avec cela vos cœurs se tranquillisent. Il n'y a de victoire que de la part d'Allah. Allah est Puissant et Sage
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs — Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(Allah appointed it) i.e. His succour (only as good tidings) of your victory, (and that your hearts thereby might be at rest) because of this help. (Victory) by means of the angels (cometh only by the help of Allah. Lo! Allah is Mighty) towards His enemies in His retribution, (Wise) He decreed that they be defeated and killed and that you triumph and gain the spoils of war.
