116S07V116

قَالَ أَلۡقُواْۖ فَلَمَّآ أَلۡقَوۡاْ سَحَرُوٓاْ أَعۡيُنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَٱسۡتَرۡهَبُوهُمۡ وَجَآءُو بِسِحۡرٍ عَظِيمٖ

«Jetez» dit-il. Puis lorsqu'ils eurent jeté, ils ensorcelèrent les yeux des gens et les épouvantèrent, et vinrent avec une puissante magie

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘AbbâsTanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

(He) Moses (said: Throw) first whatever you are going to throw! (And when they threw) 70 staffs and 70 ropes (they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and overawed them) scared them, (and produced a mighty spell) it is also said that this means: a clear lie.

117S07V117

۞وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنۡ أَلۡقِ عَصَاكَۖ فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا يَأۡفِكُونَ

Et Nous révélâmes à Moïse: «Jette ton bâton». Et voilà que celui-ci se mit à engloutir ce qu'ils avaient fabriqué

(And We inspired Moses (saying): Throw thy staff!) and he threw it. (And lo! it swallowed up their lying show) their staffs and ropes.

118S07V118

فَوَقَعَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَبَطَلَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

Ainsi la vérité se manifesta et ce qu'ils firent fût vain

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘AbbâsTanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

(Thus was the Truth vindicated) it became clear that Moses was right (and that which they were doing) of sorcery (was made vain) fizzled away.

119S07V119

فَغُلِبُواْ هُنَالِكَ وَٱنقَلَبُواْ صَٰغِرِينَ

Ainsi ils furent battus et se trouvèrent humiliés

(Thus were they there defeated) upon which Moses was victorious against them (and brought low) and they were humiliated.

120S07V120

وَأُلۡقِيَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَٰجِدِينَ

Et les magiciens se jetèrent prosternés

(And the wizards fell down prostrate) to Allah; it is also said that they prostrated themselves so fast, that it seemed as if they had fallen prostrate,
