قَالُواْ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامٗا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَٰكِفِينَ
Ils dirent: «Nous adorons des idoles et nous leurs restons attachés»
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs — Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(They said: We worship idols) deities, (and are ever devoted unto them) we worship them and remain devoted to their worship.
قَالَ هَلۡ يَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ
Il dit: «Vous entendent-elles lorsque vous [les] appelez
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs — Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(He said) Abraham said to them: (Do they hear you when ye cry) do these deities answer you when you call upon them?
أَوۡ يَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ يَضُرُّونَ
ou vous profitent-elles? ou vous nuisent-elles?»
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs — Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(Or do they benefit) you in your livelihood when you obey them (or harm you) in your livelihood when you disobey them?
قَالُواْ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفۡعَلُونَ
Ils dirent: «Non! mais nous avons trouvé nos ancêtres agissant ainsi»
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs — Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(They said: Nay, but we found our fathers acting on this use) we found our fathers worshipping these deities, and we have emulated them.
قَالَ أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ
Il dit: «Que dites-vous de ce que vous adoriez
