(There shall be no sin (imputed) unto those who believe and do good works for what they may have eaten (in the past)) [5:93]. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Mutawwii informed us> Abu Amr Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Hiri> Abu Yala> Abul-Rabi Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Ataki> Hammad> Thabit> Anas who said: I was serving people wine in the house of Abu Talhah when intoxicants were made unlawful. Their wine was made from unripe dates, split unripe dates and dates. We heard a crier announcing that intoxicants were made unlawful. And so wine started flowing in the streets of Medina. Abu Talhah said: Go out and spill it, and so I spilled it. But then one of the people said: So-and-so and so-and-so were killed with wine in their bellies. As a result, Allah, exalted is He, revealed (There shall be no sin (imputed) unto those who believe and do good works for what they may have eaten (in the past)). Narrated by Muslim from Abul-Rabi and by Bukhari from Abu Numan and both Abul-Rabi and Abu Numan narrated it from Hammad. Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Muzakki informed us> Abu Amr ibn Matar> Abu Khalifah> Abul-Walid Shubah> Abu Ishaq> al-Bara ibn Azib who said: A group of Companions of the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, died while still drinking wine. When intoxicants were made unlawful, some said: What will happen to our companions? They have died while still drinking wine. And so this verse was revealed: (There shall be no sin (imputed) unto those who believe and do good works for what they may have eaten (in the past)).

Asbab Al-Nuzul by Al-WahidiAsbab Al-Nuzul by Al-Wahidi

O you who have faith, do not slay game when you are ritually consecrated. He forbade hunting to the ritually consecrated because such a person has the intention of visiting the Kaabah. In terms of allusion, He is saying, “When someone aims for My house and turns his face to the eminent, holy Kaabah, hoping to be in My neighborhood, at least desert game should be protected and secure from him, for in his undertaken goal he has brought himself into the crowd of the pious and the good, and the attribute of the pious is this: 'They do not harm an ant, nor do they have hidden thoughts of evil.'” It has been said that ritual consecration is of two sorts: the hajji's consecration in the body, and the recognizer's consecration in the heart. As long as the hajji is consecrated in the body, game is forbidden to him. As long as the recognizer is consecrated in the heart, seeking, wanting, and free choice are forbidden to him. The mark of the heart's consecration is three things: to be on loan to the creatures, to be a stranger to oneself, and to be at ease from attachment. The fruit of the heart's consecration is three things today and three things tomorrow. Today it is the sweetness of whispered prayer, the birth of wisdom, and the soundness of perspicacity; tomorrow it will be the light of contemplation, the call of gentleness, and the cup of wine.
