Abu Juhaifa said
قَالَ: قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، نَرَاكَ قَدْ شِبْتَ، قَالَ: قَدْ شَيَّبَتْنِي هُودٌ وَأَخَوَاتُهَا.
"O Messenger of Allah we notice that you have turned gray!’ He said: ‘The Hud and its sisters have caused me to turn gray!’”
Abu’r-Rimtha at-Taimi (the servant of ar-Rabab) said
قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، وَمَعِي ابْنٌ لِي، قَالَ: فَأَرَيْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ لَمَّا رَأَيْتُهُ: هَذَا نَبِيُّ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَعَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ أَخْضَرَانِ، وَلَهُ شَعَرٌ قَدْ عَلاهُ الشَّيْبُ، وَشَيْبُهُ أَحْمَرُ.
"I came to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) with a son of mine, who said: 'So I was shown him, and I said when I saw him: ‘This is Allah’s Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). He is wearing two green garments, and he has hair that is topped with grayness, and its grayness is reddish'.”
Jabir ibn Samura was asked
قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، قَالَ: قِيلَ لِجَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ: أَكَانَ فِي رَأْسِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم شَيْبٌ؟ قَالَ: لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي رَأْسِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، شَيْبٌ إِلا شَعَرَاتٌ فِي مَفْرِقِ رَأْسِهِ، إِذَا ادَّهَنَ وَارَاهُنَّ الدُّهْنُ.
“Was there any grayness of the head of Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace)?" He replied: "There was no grayness on the head of Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace), except some hairs in the part of his hair when he applied oil and the oil made them visible.”
Abu Rimtha informed
قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو رِمْثَةَ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَعَ ابْنٍ لِي ، فَقَالَ : " ابْنُكَ هَذَا ؟ " فَقُلْتُ : نَعَمْ , أَشْهَدُ بِهِ ، قَالَ : " لا يَجْنِي عَلَيْكَ ، وَلا تَجْنِي عَلَيْهِ " ، قَالَ : وَرَأَيْتُ الشَّيْبَ أَحْمَرَ ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا أَحْسَنُ شَيْءٍ رُوِيَ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ ، وَأَفْسَرُ لأَنَّ الرِّوَايَاتِ الصَّحِيحَةَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَبْلُغِ الشَّيْبَ . وَأَبُو رِمْثَةَ اسْمُهُ : رِفَاعَةُ بْنُ يَثْرِبِيٍّ التَّيْمِيُّ .
“I came to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) with a son of mine, so he said; ‘Is this your son?’ I said: ‘Yes, I acknowledge him!’ He said: ‘He must not harm you, and you must not harm him!’ I also noticed that the grayness of his hair was reddish.”
Abu Huraira was asked
قَالَ: سُئِلَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: هَلْ خَضَبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ. قال أبو عيسى: وروى أبو عوانة هذا الحديث عن عثمان بن عبد الله بن موهب فقال عن أم سلمة
“Did Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) dye ?” He said: “Yes!”
Al-Jahdama, the wife of Bishr ibn al- Khasasiyya, said
قَالَتْ: أَنَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ يَنْفُضُ رَأْسَهُ وَقَدِ اغْتَسَلَ، وَبِرَأْسِهِ رَدْعٌ مِنْ حِنَّاءٍ أَوْ قَالَ: رَدْغٌ شَكَّ فِي هَذَا الشَّيْخُ.
"I saw Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) come out of his house shaking his head, for he had performed the major ritual ablution, and on his head there was some trace of henna." (Or he said: saffron. The Shaikh doubted this.)
Humaid told us that Anas said
قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ شَعَرَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مَخْضُوبًا.
"I saw the hair of Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace)dyed.”
Hammad said
قَالَ حَمَّادٌ : وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ شَعْرَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِنْدَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ مَخْضُوبًا
'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Uqail also informed us: "I saw the hair of Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) dyed in the presence of Anas ibn Malik."
Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Prophet said (Allah bless him and give him peace)
قَالَ: اكْتَحِلُوا بِالإِثْمِدِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ، وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ وَزَعَمَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، كَانَتْ لَهُ مُكْحُلَةٌ يَكْتَحِلُ مِنْهَا كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ، ثَلاثَةً فِي هَذِهِ، وَثَلاثَةً فِي هَذِهِ.
"Color the edges of the eyelids with antimony ,and three times in that.
Ibn 'Abbas said
قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ (ح) وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: كَانَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَكْتَحِلُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنَامَ بِالإِثْمِدِ، ثَلاثًا فِي كُلِّ عَيْنٍ، وَقَالَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، فِي حَدِيثِهِ: إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، كَانَتْ لَهُ مُكْحُلَةٌ يَكْتَحِلُ مِنْهَا عِنْدَ النَّوْمِ، ثَلاثًا فِي كُلِّ عَيْنٍ.
“Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) used to color the edges of his eyelids with antimony before going to sleep, three times in each eye. Yazid ibn Harun also said in his tradition: “The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) had a kohl jar from which he used to apply kohl to his eyelashes before going to sleep, three times in each eye.”
Jabir (i.e. Ibn Abdillah) said
قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: عَلَيْكُمْ بِالإِثْمِدِ عِنْدَ النَّوْمِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ، وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ.
"Allah’s Messenger said (Allah bless him and give him peace): “You must apply antimony before going to sleep, for it clears the vision and makes the eyelashes grow.”
Ibn "Abbas said
قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: إِنَّ خَيْرَ أَكْحَالِكُمُ الإِثْمِدُ، يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ، وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ.
"Allah’s Messenger said (Allah bless him and give him peace): 'The best of your eye salves is antimony, for it clears the vision and makes the eyelashes grow.'”
Ibn 'Umar said
قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: عَلَيْكُمْ بِالإِثْمِدِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ، وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ.
"You must apply antimony, for it clears the vision and makes the eyelashes grow.”
Umm ul Mu'mineen Umm Salama said
قَالَتْ: كَانَ أَحَبَّ الثِّيَابِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْقَمِيصُ.
"The apparel dearest to Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) was the shirt .”
Umm Salama said
قَالَتْ: كَانَ أَحَبَّ الثِّيَابِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْقَمِيصُ.
"The apparel dearest to Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) was the shirt.”
Umm Salama said
قَالَتْ: كَانَ أَحَبَّ الثِّيَابِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَلْبَسُهُ، الْقَمِيصُ.
"The apparel dearest to Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) was the shirt he used to wear.”
Asma bint Yazid said
قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ بُدَيْلٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَيْسَرَةَ الْعُقَيْلِيَّ، عَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ، عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَتْ: كَانَ كُمُّ قَمِيصِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِلَى الرُّسْغِ.
“The sleeve of the shirt of Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) extended to the wrist.”
Mu'awiya ibn Qurra reported that his father said
قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ قُشَيْرٍ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي رَهْطٍ مِنْ مُزَيْنَةَ لِنُبَايِعَهُ، وَإِنَّ قَمِيصَهُ لَمُطْلَقٌ، أَوْ قَالَ: زِرُّ قَمِيصِهِ مُطْلَقٌ قَالَ: فَأَدْخَلْتُ يَدِي فِي جَيْبِ قَمِيصِهِ، فَمَسَسْتُ الْخَاتَمَ.
“I came to Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) in a group of fewer than ten men from the Muzaina tribe, so that we might pay homage to him, and his shirt was set loose (or: “the button of his shirt was set loose”), so I inserted my hand in the breast of his shirt and I touched the Seal.”
Anas ibn Malik said
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ الشَّهِيدِ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم خَرَجَ وَهُوَ يَتَّكِئُ عَلَى أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبٌ قِطْرِيٌّ، قَدْ تَوَشَّحَ بِهِ، فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ.
"The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) came out leaning on Usama ibn Zaid, wearing an outer garment of coarse cotton fabric, which he had thrown on loosely, then he led them in the ritual prayer.”
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said
قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، إِذَا اسْتَجَدَّ ثَوْبًا سَمَّاهُ بِاسْمِهِ عِمَامَةً أَوْ قَمِيصًا أَوْ رِدَاءً، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ كَمَا كَسَوْتَنِيهِ، أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهُ وَخَيْرَ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ. حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ يُونُسَ الْكُوفِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ الْمُزَنِيُّ، عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، نَحْوَهُ.
"When Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) donned a new garment, he would call it by its name, then he would say: 'O Allah praise be to You, as You have clothed me with it! I beg You for its goodness and the goodness of what it has been made for, and I take refuge with You from its evil and the evil of what it has been made for!’”
