قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْمَدَّاحِينَ فَاحْثُوا فِي وُجُوهِهِمُ التُّرَابَ.
'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah reported that a man was praising another man in the presence of Ibn 'Umar. Ibn 'Umar began to throw dust towards his mouth. He said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'When you see those who praise people, throw dust in their faces.'"
قَالَ رَجَاءٌ: أَقْبَلْتُ مَعَ مِحْجَنٍ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى مَسْجِدِ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ، فَإِذَا بُرَيْدَةُ الأَسْلَمِيُّ عَلَى بَابٍ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ جَالِسٌ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ: سُكْبَةُ، يُطِيلُ الصَّلاَةَ، فَلَمَّا انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ، وَعَلَيْهِ بُرْدَةٌ، وَكَانَ بُرَيْدَةُ صَاحِبَ مُزَاحَاتٍ، فَقَالَ: يَا مِحْجَنُ أَتُصَلِّي كَمَا يُصَلِّي سُكْبَةُ؟ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ مِحْجَنٌ، وَرَجَعَ، قَالَ: قَالَ مِحْجَنٌ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَخَذَ بِيَدِي، فَانْطَلَقْنَا نَمْشِي حَتَّى صَعِدْنَا أُحُدًا، فَأَشْرَفَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَ: وَيْلُ أُمِّهَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ، يَتْرُكُهَا أَهْلُهَا كَأَعْمَرَ مَا تَكُونُ، يَأْتِيهَا الدَّجَّالُ، فَيَجِدُ عَلَى كُلِّ بَابٍ مِنْ أَبْوَابِهَا مَلَكًا، فَلاَ يَدْخُلُهَا، ثُمَّ انْحَدَرَ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، رَأَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَجُلاً يُصَلِّي، وَيَسْجُدُ، وَيَرْكَعُ، فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: مَنْ هَذَا؟ فَأَخَذْتُ أُطْرِيهِ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذَا فُلاَنٌ، وَهَذَا. فَقَالَ أَمْسِكْ، لاَ تُسْمِعْهُ فَتُهْلِكَهُ، قَالَ: فَانْطَلَقَ يَمْشِي، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ حُجَرِهِ، لَكِنَّهُ نَفَضَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ خَيْرَ دِينِكُمْ أَيْسَرُهُ، إِنَّ خَيْرَ دِينِكُمْ أَيْسَرُهُ ثَلاثًا.
Raja' said. "One day Mihjan and I went to the mosque of the people of Basra. Burayda al-Aslami was sitting there by one of the mosque doors. Inside the mosque there was a man called Sabka who used to make the prayers long. We came to the mosque door which had a fringed woollen cloth over it. Now Burayda was someone who made jokes. He said, 'Mihjan, don't you pray as Sabka prays?' Mihjan did not answer and went back. Mihjan said, 'The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, once took me by the hand and we went together to the top of Uhud. He looked down on Madina and said, "Woe to a town whose people will abandon it when it becomes very prosperous. Then the Dajjal will come to it and find two angels at each of its gates, so he will not enter it." Then he went down until we reached the mosque and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw a man praying, prostrating and bowing. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked me, "Who is this?" and I began to praise him, saying, "Messenger of Allah, this is so-and-so and so-and-so." "Stop!" he said, "Do not let him hear or you will destroy him."'"
قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَدْ مَدَحْتُ اللَّهَ بِمَحَامِدَ وَمِدَحٍ، وَإِيَّاكَ. فَقَالَ: أَمَا إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يُحِبُّ الْحَمْدَ، فَجَعَلْتُ أُنْشِدُهُ، فَاسْتَأْذَنَ رَجُلٌ طُوَالٌ أَصْلَعُ، فَقَالَ لِيَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم: اسْكُتْ، فَدَخَلَ، فَتَكَلَّمَ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجَ، فَأَنْشَدْتُهُ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَكَّتَنِي، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ، فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا، فَقُلْتُ: مَنْ هَذَا الَّذِي سَكَّتَّنِي لَهُ؟ قَالَ: هَذَا رَجُلٌ لاَ يُحِبُّ الْبَاطِلَ.
Al-Aswad ibn Suray' said, "I came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, 'Messenger of Allah, I have praised Allah and you in poems of praise and eulogies.' He said, 'As far as your Lord is concerned, He must be praised,' and so I began to recite them. Then a tall bald man asked for permission to enter. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, told me, 'Be silent.' The man came in and spoke for a time and then left. Then I recited again. Then the other man came back and he made be silent again. Then the man left again. That happened two or three times. I asked, 'Who is this man for whom I must be silent?' He replied, 'This is a man who does not like vain things.'"
قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نُجَيْدِ بْنِ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ الْخُزَاعِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي نُجَيْدٌ، أَنَّ شَاعِرًا جَاءَ إِلَى عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ فَأَعْطَاهُ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: تُعْطِي شَاعِرًا؟ فَقَالَ: أُبْقِي عَلَى عِرْضِي.
Abu Nujayd said, "A poet came to 'Imran ibn Husayn and 'Imran gave him something. 'Imran was asked, 'You give to a poet?' He said, 'I am preserving my reputation (from his satire).'"
قَالَ: كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ: لاَ تُكْرِمْ صَدِيقَكَ بِمَا يَشُقُّ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn 'Awn reported, "They used to say, 'Do not honour your guest in a way which will be burdensome for him.'"
قَالَ: إِذَا عَادَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ أَوْ زَارَهُ، قَالَ اللَّهُ لَهُ: طِبْتَ وَطَابَ مَمْشَاكَ، وَتَبَوَّأْتَ مَنْزِلاً فِي الْجَنَّةِ.
Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "When a man visits his brothers, Allah tells him, 'You have been good and your evening will be good and you can take your place in the Garden.'"
قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مَالِكَ بْنَ دِينَارٍ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ أَبِي غَالِبٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَتْ: زَارَنَا سَلْمَانُ مِنَ الْمَدَائِنِ إِلَى الشَّامِ مَاشِيًا، وَعَلَيْهِ كِسَاءٌ وَانْدَرْوَرْدُ، قَالَ: يَعْنِي سَرَاوِيلَ مُشَمَّرَةً، قَالَ ابْنُ شَوْذَبٍ: رُؤِيَ سَلْمَانُ وَعَلَيْهِ كِسَاءٌ مَطْمُومُ الرَّأْسِ سَاقِطُ الأُذُنَيْنِ، يَعْنِي أَنَّهُ كَانَ أَرْفَشَ. فَقِيلَ لَهُ: شَوَّهْتَ نَفْسَكَ، قَالَ: إِنَّ الْخَيْرَ خَيْرُ الاخِرَةِ.
Umm ad-Darda' said, "Salman came from al-Mada'in (Ctesiphon) to Syria to visit us on foot wearing a shirt (kisa') and trousers." Shawdhab said, "Salman was seen wearing a short with all his hair shaved off and his large ears showing. He was told, 'You have made yourself ugly.' He replied, "The real good is the good of the Next World.'"
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلامٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم زَارَ أَهْلَ بَيْتٍ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ، فَطَعِمَ عِنْدَهُمْ طَعَامًا، فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ أَمَرَ بِمَكَانٍ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ، فَنُضِحَ لَهُ عَلَى بِسَاطٍ، فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ، وَدَعَا لَهُمْ.
Anas ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, visited one of the houses of the Ansar and ate some food with them. When he left, he asked for a place in the house and some water was sprinkled on a carpet for him. He prayed on it and made supplication for them.
قَالَ: جَاءَ عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ إِلَى أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ، وَعَلَيْهِ ثِيَابُ صُوفٍ، فَقَالَ أَبُو الْعَالِيَةِ: إِنَّمَا هَذِهِ ثِيَابُ الرُّهْبَانِ، إِنْ كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ إِذَا تَزَاوَرُوا تَجَمَّلُوا.
'Abdulkarim Abu Umuyyah came to Abu Al'aliyah and on him were wool clothes. So Abu Al'aliyah said "These are but the clothes of monks, as the Muslims, when visiting each other, would beautify themselves."
قَالَ : " أَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيَّ أَسْمَاءُ جُبَّةً مِنْ طَيَالِسَةٍ عَلَيْهَا لَبِنَةُ شِبْرٍ مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ ، وَإِنَّ فَرْجَيْهَا مَكْفُوفَانِ بِهِ ، فَقَالَتْ : هَذِهِ جُبَّةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، كَانَ يَلْبَسُهَا لِلْوُفُودِ ، وَيَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ.
'Abdullah, the client of Asma', said, "Asma' brought out to me a cloak of Tayalisah (a type of mantle) which had a collar border a span (wide) of brocade and verily it's two openings were hemmed with it (i.e. brocade). She said, 'This is the of the cloak of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He used to wear it for delegations and on Jumu'a.' "
قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ قَالَ: وَجَدَ عُمَرُ حُلَّةَ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ، فَأَتَى بِهَا النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ: اشْتَرِ هَذِهِ، وَالْبَسْهَا عِنْدَ الْجُمُعَةِ، أَوْ حِينَ تَقْدِمُ عَلَيْكَ الْوُفُودُ، فَقَالَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلاَةُ وَالسَّلاَمُ: إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُهَا مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ، وَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِحُلَلٍ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بِحُلَّةٍ، وَإِلَى أُسَامَةَ بِحُلَّةٍ، وَإِلَى عَلِيٍّ بِحُلَّةٍ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَرْسَلْتَ بِهَا إِلَيَّ، لَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم: تَبِيعُهَا، أَوْ تَقْضِي بِهَا حَاجَتَكَ.
'Abdullah ibn 'Umar said, "'Umar found a silk robe and brought it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, 'Buy this and wear it on Jumu'ah and when delegations come to you.' The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied, 'Only someone who has no portion in the Next World wears this.' Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was brought some robes and sent one robe to 'Umar, one to Usama, and one to 'Ali. 'Umar said, 'Messenger of Allah! You have sent this to me when I heard you say what you said about it.' The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'You can sell it or take care of your needs with it.'"
قَالَ: زَارَ رَجُلٌ أَخًا لَهُ فِي قَرْيَةٍ، فَأَرْصَدَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَلَكًا عَلَى مَدْرَجَتِهِ، فَقَالَ: أَيْنَ تُرِيدُ؟ قَالَ: أَخًا لِي فِي هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ، فَقَالَ: هَلْ لَهُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ تَرُبُّهَا؟ قَالَ: لاَ، إِنِّي أُحِبُّهُ فِي اللهِ، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ إِلَيْكَ، أَنَّ اللَّهَ أَحَبَّكَ كَمَا أَحْبَبْتَهُ.
Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "A man visited a brother of his in a village, so Allah put an angel in wait for him on the road. He asked, 'Where are you going?' He replied, 'To a brother of mine in this village.' He said, 'Is he responsible for some blessing you have?' He said, 'No, I love him for Allah.' He said, 'I am a messenger of Allah to you. Allah loves you as you love him.'"
قَالَ: أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ مَعَ مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ، قُلْتُ: إِنِّي أُحِبُّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ، قَالَ: أَنْتَ مَعَ مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ.
Abu Dharr said, "I asked, 'Messenger of Allah, what if a man loves a people but cannot join them?' He replied, 'Abu Dharr, you are with the one you love.' I said, 'I love Allah and His Messenger.' He said, 'Abu Dharr, you are with the one you love.'"
قَالَ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، مَتَى السَّاعَةُ؟ فَقَالَ: وَمَا أَعْدَدْتَ لَهَا؟ قَالَ: مَا أَعْدَدْتُ مِنْ كَبِيرٍ، إِلاَّ أَنِّي أُحِبُّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ، فَقَالَ: الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ.
Anas reported that a man asked the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, "Prophet of Allah, when will the Final Hour come?" He said, "Have you not made preparation for it?" He replied, " I am not prepared for a terrible event , but I love Allah and His Messenger." He said, "A man is with the one he loves."
قَالَ: مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا، وَيَعْرِفْ حَقَّ كَبِيرِنَا، فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا.
Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Anyone who does not show mercy to our children nor acknowledge the right of our old people is not one of us."
قَالَ: مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا، وَيَعْرِفْ حَقَّ كَبِيرِنَا، فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا.
'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As reported that it reached him that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Anyone who does not show mercy to our children nor acknowledge the right of our old people is not one of us."
قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَعْرِفْ حَقَّ كَبِيرِنَا، وَيَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا.
The same from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb.
قَالَ: مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا، وَيُجِلَّ كَبِيرَنَا، فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا.
The same from Abu Umama.
قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو كِنَانَةَ، عَنِ الأَشْعَرِيِّ قَالَ: إِنَّ مِنَ إِجْلاَلِ اللهِ إِكْرَامَ ذِي الشَّيْبَةِ الْمُسْلِمِ، وَحَامِلِ الْقُرْآنِ، غَيْرِ الْغَالِي فِيهِ، وَلاَ الْجَافِي عَنْهُ، وَإِكْرَامَ ذِي السُّلْطَانِ الْمُقْسِطِ.
Al-Ash'ari said, "Part of respect for Allah is to show respect to an old Muslim and to someone who knows the Qur'an, as long as he does not go to excess in it nor turn away from it, and to respect a just ruler."
قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا، وَيُوَقِّرْ كَبِيرَنَا.
