It was narrated that Tariq bin Ziyad said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ سَارَ عَلِيٌّ إِلَى النَّهْرَوَانِ فَقَتَلَ الْخَوَارِجَ فَقَالَ اطْلُبُوا فَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ سَيَجِيءُ قَوْمٌ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ بِكَلِمَةِ الْحَقِّ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حُلُوقَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنْ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنْ الرَّمِيَّةِ سِيمَاهُمْ أَوْ فِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ أَسْوَدُ مُخْدَجُ الْيَدِ فِي يَدِهِ شَعَرَاتٌ سُودٌ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِمْ فَقَدْ قَتَلْتُمْ شَرَّ النَّاسِ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِمْ فَقَدْ قَتَلْتُمْ خَيْرَ النَّاسِ قَالَ ثُمَّ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَا الْمُخْدَجَ قَالَ فَخَرَرْنَا سُجُودًا وَخَرَّ عَلِيٌّ سَاجِدًا مَعَنَا.
‘Ali marched to an-Nahrawan and killed the Khawarij. Then he said: Look, for the Prophet (ﷺ) said: `There will come a people who will speak the word of truth but it will not go any further than their throats; they will pass out of Islam as the arrow passes out of the prey. Their sign - or among them - will be a black man with a deformed arm, on which there are black hairs. If he is among them, then you will have killed the worst of people; if he is not among them, then you will have killed the best of people.” Then we found the one with the deformity, and we fell down in prostration and ‘Ali fell down in prostration with us. .
It was narrated that `Amr bin Sufyan said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ خَطَبَ رَجُلٌ يَوْمَ الْبَصْرَةِ حِينَ ظَهَرَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ هَذَا الْخَطِيبُ الشَّحْشَحُ سَبَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ بَعْدَهُمْ يَصْنَعُ اللَّهُ فِيهَا مَا شَاءَ.
A man gave a speech when ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) prevailed on the day of Basrah, and ‘Ali said: This speaker does not know what he is talking about. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came first, Abu Bakr came second and `Umar came third. Then we got involved in turmoil after they were gone, and Allah will judge concerning it as He wills.
قَالَ قِيلَ لِعَلِيٍّ وَلِأَبِي بَكْرٍ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ مَعَ أَحَدِكُمَا جِبْرِيلُ وَمَعَ الْآخَرِ مِيكَائِيلُ وَإِسْرَافِيلُ مَلَكٌ عَظِيمٌ يَشْهَدُ الْقِتَالَ أَوْ قَالَ يَشْهَدُ الصَّفَّ.
It was narrated from Abu Salih al-Hanafi that It was said to ‘Ali and Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنهما) on the day of Badr. Jibreel is with one of you and Mika`eel is with the other, and Israfeel, a mighty angel, is present at the fight - or he said, is present in the ranks.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مِسْعَرٌ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى أَرْبَعًا قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ.
It was narrated from `Ali (رضي الله عنه) that The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed four before Zuhr.
It was narrated that Qais al-Kharifi said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ سَبَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ أَوْ أَصَابَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ فَكَانَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ.
I heard ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) say on this minbar. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came first, Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) came second and `Umar (رضي الله عنه) came third; then we got involved in turmoil, and it was what Allah willed.
It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ مِنْ كُلِّ اللَّيْلِ قَدْ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ أَوَّلِهِ وَأَوْسَطِهِ وَآخِرِهِ وَانْتَهَى وِتْرُهُ إِلَى آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed Witr at all times of the night, at the beginning, in the middle and at the end. Then in the end his Witr was at the end of the night.
It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي مِنْ التَّطَوُّعِ ثَمَانِيَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَبِالنَّهَارِ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً.
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to pray eight rak`ahs of voluntary prayer and during the day twelve rak`ahs.
It was narrated that `Asim bin Damrah as-Salooli said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ السَّلُولِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَلَا إِنَّ الْوَتْرَ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ كَصَلَاتِكُمْ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْتَرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَوْتِرُوا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ أَوْتِرُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ وَتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوَتْرَ وَهَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَنْدَلٍ وَمَعْنَاهُمَا وَاحِدٌ.
‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: Verily, Witr is not a must like your prescribed prayers, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed Witr, then he said: “Pray Witr, O people of the Qur`an. Pray Witr, for Allah is One and loves that which is odd numbered.”
It was narrated that Katheer bin Nafi’ an-Nawwa` said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُلَيْلٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ قَبْلِي نَبِيٌّ إِلَّا قَدْ أُعْطِيَ سَبْعَةَ رُفَقَاءَ نُجَبَاءَ وُزَرَاءَ وَإِنِّي أُعْطِيتُ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ حَمْزَةُ وَجَعْفَرٌ وَعَلِيٌّ وَحَسَنٌ وَحُسَيْنٌ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَالْمِقْدَادُ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ وَأَبُو ذَرٍّ وَحُذَيْفَةُ وَسَلْمَانُ وَعَمَّارٌ وَبِلَالٌ.
I heard ‘Abdullah bin Mulail say: I heard Ali (رضي الله عنه) say: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: `There is no Prophet who came before me but he was given seven chiefs, advisors and nobles, but I have been given fourteen. Hamzah, Ja`far, `Ali, Hasan, Husain, Abu Bakr, ʻUmar, al-Miqdad, Hudhaifah, Salman, `Ammar and Bilal”. (رضي الله عنهم)
It was narrated that ’Abd Khair said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى النَّعْلَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَوْلَا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَ كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ لَرَأَيْتُ أَنَّ بَاطِنَ الْقَدَمَيْنِ هُوَ أَحَقُّ بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ ظَاهِرِهِمَا.
I saw Ali (رضي الله عنه) doing wudoo’ and wiping over his shoes. Then he said: “If I had not seen the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) doing what you have seen me do, I would have thought that the bottoms of the feet were more deserving of being wiped than their tops”.
It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ لَيْسَ فِي مَالٍ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ.
No zakah is due on wealth until one year has passed.
It was narrated that ‘Asim bin Damrah said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ قُلْتُ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ إِنَّ الشِّيعَةَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَرْجِعُ قَالَ كَذَبَ أُولَئِكَ الْكَذَّابُونَ لَوْ عَلِمْنَا ذَاكَ مَا تَزَوَّجَ نِسَاؤُهُ وَلَا قَسَمْنَا مِيرَاثَهُ.
I said to al-Hasan bin `Ali: The Shi`ah claim that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) will return! He said. Those liars are lying. If we knew that, his wives would not have got married and we would not have divided his estate.
It was narrated from `Ali (رضي الله عنه) that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ إِنِّي قَدْ عَفَوْتُ لَكُمْ عَنْ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ وَلَا صَدَقَةَ فِيهِمَا.
“I have exempted you with regard to horses and slaves; no zakah is due on them.”
It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَظْهَرَهُ شُفِّعَ فِي عَشَرَةٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ قَدْ وَجَبَتْ لَهُمْ النَّارُ.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: `Whoever reads Qur`an and learns it by heart, he will be granted intercession for ten of his family for whom Hell was due.”
It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَفَوْتُ عَنْ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ فِي الصَّدَقَةِ.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: `I have exempted horses and slaves from zakah.”
It was narrated from ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) that Jibreel (عليه السلام) came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ إِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ أَوْ كَلْبٌ وَكَانَ الْكَلْبُ لِلْحَسَنِ فِي الْبَيْتِ.
`We do not enter a house in which there is an image or a dog.` And the dog belonging to al-Hasan was in the house.
It was narrated that Qais bin `Ubad said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ قُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ أَرَأَيْتَ مَسِيرَكَ هَذَا عَهْدٌ عَهِدَهُ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمْ رَأْيٌ رَأَيْتَهُ قَالَ مَا تُرِيدُ إِلَى هَذَا قُلْتُ دِينَنَا دِينَنَا قَالَ مَا عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهِ شَيْئًا وَلَكِنْ رَأْيٌ رَأَيْتُهُ.
I said to `Ali: Do you think that this decision of yours to leave (Madinah) is something that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recommended to you to do, or is it something that you decided yourself? He said: why are you asking this question? I said: For the sake of our religion. He said. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not recommend me to do anything with regard to this; rather it is something I decided myself.
It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ كَانَ لِلْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ رُمْحٌ فَكُنَّا إِذَا خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَزَاةٍ خَرَجَ بِهِ مَعَهُ فَيَرْكُزُهُ فَيَمُرُّ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ فَيَحْمِلُونَهُ فَقُلْتُ لَئِنْ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَأُخْبِرَنَّهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ إِنْ فَعَلْتَ لَمْ تَرْفَعْ ضَالَّةً.
Al-Mugheerah bin Shu`bah had a spear, and when we went out with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on a campaign, he would take it with him and stick it in the ground. And the people would pass by him and give him a ride. I said: When I go to the Prophet (ﷺ) I will tell him. He said: If you do that, no one will pick up a lost item.
It was narrated that Abu Hayyah bin Qais said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ تَوَضَّأَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ شَرِبَ فَضْلَ وَضُوئِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَوَضَّأُ.
’Ali (رضي الله عنه) did wudoo’, each part three times, then he drank the left over water. Then he said: This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) do wudoo`.
It was narrated that Salim bin Abi Hafsah said
dansMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbalقَالَ بَلَغَنِي عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُلَيْلٍ، فَغَدَوْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ فِي جَنَازَةٍ فَحَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُلَيْلٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ أُعْطِيَ كُلُّ نَبِيٍّ سَبْعَةَ نُجَبَاءَ وَأُعْطِيَ نَبِيُّكُمْ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ نَجِيبًا مِنْهُمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ وَعَمَّارُ بْنُ يَاسِرٍ.
A man narrated to me from `Abdullah bin Mulail that he said: I heard `Ali (رضي الله عنه) say: Each Prophet (ﷺ) was given seven nobles, but your Prophet (ﷺ) was given fourteen nobles, including Abu Bakr, ʻUmar, ‘Abdullah bin Mas`ood and ‘Ammar bin Yasir. (رضي الله عنهم)
